"Relax your grip just a bit," Yatusatari said on blocking the first blow. It had been several years since she'd held a sword against another, but it was a bit comforting to know she hadn't gotten too rusty. She'd still be able to hold her own in a fight if it came down to it. Maybe this kid was some sort of blessing in disguise. The next two were blocked with similar ease, despite the backhand stance she used. "That's it, you found it. Hold your sword with that grip and you won't be losing it in combat easily or hurting your hands on the swing. You catch on quick!"
She grinned, but didn't waste any time in moving on. "Next up is an essential for combat; blocking enemy attacks. Your sword will take damage from direct collisions, and there's a chance your sword could snap in two if you let it get hit too much. Broadswords like mine are more suited to clashing with other weapons, but it's bound to happen on your end with that longsword of yours. Keep the same grip as you have when you swing your sword, but move your blade in such a way that you catch the blow near the hilt guard if at all possible. If your enemy's sword gets caught between the... err... teeth, it's going to be easy for them to just pull the sword out of your hand and leave you defenseless long enough to attack. If you block with an intent to keep them near the guard, you don't have to worry about that quite as much."
She took a fighting stance and advanced in Malthus's direction. "All right, let's test out your block. Don't worry, I'm not going to hit you if I can help it, but block like I was aiming to take your life," She instructed, sending four slashes at Malthus in similar secession as earlier. However, the attacks were noticeably subdued and slower, and she was ready to pull back if he couldn't throw up a guard fast enough. She definitely wouldn't like it if her temporary student got hurt just training; that would be terrible.

For a brief moment, Malthus had hope. He remembered blocking a falling tree branch by forming an angle with his crossed daggers. Could it make up for his general lack of strength?
The answer was no. He swung the Keyblade into position to block, attempting to slide her sword into hilt. It didn't work, and Burning Horizon was knocked back, himself moving out of the way of the blow. "Hmm." Was his only sentence, wielding the Keyblade two-handed now. It still wasn't enough, though better. The center of gravity was all wrong. So when the third strike came, he didn't attempt to block it, but merely jumped over her, landing behind her. "Hold on."
Malthus ran a finger up and down both sides of the Keyblade. Need to be sure... There was a distinct difference between the two sides, though it was very difficult to pin down. It felt as it looked; like a blunt weapon. But he'd seen it cut things before... Doubt left his mind. He believed the side with the teeth was blunt. Now to act on it.
He turned around, facing her. "I have an idea. My strength isn't up to your advice. But... well, just swing at me again."

"I won't pretend to know what your strengths are in combat, but it'd be better if we didn't move on until you found an effective way to block blows. I didn't think my way of doing it would cut it for you, but it was worth a shot. All right then, like I said last time, I'm not going to hit you if I can help it, but block like I'm trying to gut you," Yatusatari said, shrugging and going with the change. If he wanted to work on his block, that was fine with her; she'd help out either way. She advanced again, with a similar four strike series of attacks, subdued enough to be blocked, but not enough so that they wouldn't leave a strong impact when they hit the key thing Malthus was using. She'd still be able to stop her blow if necessary to avoid hitting him, but it would still be a sizeable enough impact to effectively test his blocks. This was turning out to be interesting.

The first blow came at him, and he put his plan into action.
Feet braced against the ground. Check. Left hand moving up, grasping Burning Horizon up higher on the blade, same side as the teeth. Check. Keyblade moving to the proper spot as he saw the blow coming...
The impact ran through his body and down through his legs. Perfect. "The teeth seem..." He said, shifting the key for the next block. "To be ornamental." Another shuddering impact. "This sword appears blunt, but..." The third blow came, and he twisted his body around to meet it properly. "One side is blunt, the other cuts. Single-edged." The final block.
He stepped back, recovering some from blocking. To be honest, his best bet was to dodge more than block, but it was good to know he could block strong strikes in a pinch. "This... well, I call it a keyblade... this keyblade appeared in my hands randomly. It's obviously enchanted. I'm not sure it can be broken."

"Not bad. Can't say about your sword breaking or not, but I'd rather be skeptical and alive than test it out and find out I'm wrong. Best not to tempt fate, 'cause it's always ready to get you as soon as you give it a chance," Yatusatari mused, nodding in approval at his technique in blocking. What worked for some didn't work for others; Masamune was much too huge to be used for blocking in that way. In fact, with its girth, it was easier to simply hide behind it to block attacks than to actually raise it to block.
"All right then, moving on. While slashes are good all-purpose attacks, some enemies require a certain strategy to attack depending on their weapons and what type of armor they use. If you meet an armored opponent full-on with your sword, unless you swing with enough force to cut through the armor and the person, chances are you're going to be caught recoiling from your own attack, which is going to leave you open to counters. A good way to add an extra kick to your sword swings are to jump and add your weight to the swing as you're coming down. This is a good way to make sure your sword goes through armor, but be warned, this type of move can be blocked. I'm not going to demonstrate this one because it's dangerous and I don't want to accidentally hurt you with it."
"Anyways, the next thing I'm going to show you is a thrust. Thrusting with your sword is a good way to slip through defenses such as shields and blocks, and even armor if you aim it right," She explained, flipping her sword forwards and stabbing the air in a way that would have been brutal to any kind of training dummy. "You won't leave a big wound this way, and you're a bit open right after execution, but it's a good move to know in the case you need it. Be careful attacking enemies with their backs against a wall or solid object with this move; if your weapon gets stuck in the wall, you'll be venerable until you can pull it out."
Yatusatari rolled her shoulders and took a defensive stance, flipping her sword back to face behind her. "All right, time to see how well you've picked up what I've taught you so far. Come at me with the moves I've taught you so far; I'll be able to tell where to go next based on how your fighting style's adjusted. You seem to be used to shorter weapons than that, so now's the perfect time to get used to the weight and feel of your weapon. All right, show me what you've learned!"

With the sword she's using... she'll be better at blocking slashes. Malthus thought to himself. I could seriously hurt her if I wasn't careful... hmm. He discarded that thought from his mind. He couldn't accurately demonstrate his fighting style if he slowed down like she did with his strikes; that was the opposite of how he normally fought. But there was a way...
That was it. If he was going to hit her, he'd simply make Burning Horizon vanish before it touched her. He went forwards at her, grinning. He knew was he was going to do. One handed slash from left to right, his perspective, at her, with a follow up diagonal cut from lower right to upper left. A quick jump and flip over her, spinning around for a two handed attack at her back, and to finish it, he reversed that last slash to go into a thrust; even if she managed to turn around to block the slash from behind in time, the stab had a chance of hitting even if she attempted to deflect it.

The slashes sent from the front were blocked with relative ease, and swiftly. Yatusatari didn't bother turning with Malthus as he flipped over her, but dodged out of the way in time to avoid the slash and the stab. She sheathed her sword in its scabbard and gave the boy a thumbs-up. "Not bad at all, kid; you're a fast learner. You've got your basics down nicely. Now, we can continue now, or we can take a break and keep going a little later; it's all up to you, kid. Take your time; if you push yourself too hard, you might end up hurt. Let me know when you're ready to keep going with it."

"Hmmm..."
Malthus let Burning Horizon disappear and looked up into the clear sky. "I think I need to see more of this world... and, truth be told, it's only in a practical fight that I think I could learn more. Like you said, I'm a fast learner. How about I meet you sometime back here? That is, if you aren't too busy or anything like that..." He shrugged, looking at her with his eyes bright.
Oddly, he didn't seem tired at all.

"All right then. If you feel like you really need a combat situation, the arena here holds tournaments, training sessions and the like all the time. Think there was a roster on the way in for you to sign up, or you could track down Phil wherever he's hiding at," Yatusatari said, running her hand through her hair.
"If you need me, I guess I'll be around here waiting. Hope you enjoy the sights, kid."

"Hmm, alright then." Malthus nodded. He gave her a thumbs up, grinned, and then immediately began bounding into the air to cover large distances. Since he could jump 40 feet in the air, he found this the most convenient way to travel... and it wasn't a surprise that he tended to spend his time on rooftops; what better way to get away from people? Either way, it helped him clear the arena wall very easily as he went to go see the town.
