"Lean from...? Hrumph, sure didn't sound like 'Please teach me' to me," Seifer snorted, sidestepping the tripping girl so he wasn't bowled over. "If you wanted me to teach you how to do it, all you had to do was ask, instead of making me think some other kid went nuts around here. I guess I've got a little time I can show you some pointers with, but I still have other things planned to do today, so try not to make this drag on for too long, all right?"

Nanette didn't look the gift horse in the mouth.
"Done," she said with an enthusiastic look. "I'm all ears, Seifer."

"Basically, you try to hit the other guy and not let him hit you. Roll out of the way, block with your bat, whatever; the goal's mostly to hit the other guy more than he hits you. If you're doing the tournament, you're trying to knock the foam balls off his getup to win," Seifer said, deciding to start with the basics of things. He shrugged. "But you probably know that. If you'll watch your opponents carefully, you can sort of tell if they'll swing high or low, but seeing exactly what they're going to do is hard to do. When you see them getting ready to attack, get out of the way, and come back in with your own attack while they're recovering from missing."
Seifer stopped there, sticking his hands into his pockets and turning his side towards Nanette. "And that's about it. The rest is more luck than anything else, like that Setzer guy says. As for your own fighting style, I can't help you there, you'll more or less have to learn that on your own. So there, any questions?"

Nanette frowned a little. Not exactly what she'd been gunning for, but she could work with that.
As her mind wrapped around the gist of it, Nanette rubbed her chin dutifully. There were a few things she was still a little iffy on....
"Uh... hmmm." she half-replied. "You, uh... foam balls, huh? Can you have a Struggle match without the foam balls?"

"Yeah, you can. If that's the case, then it's just hit the other guy the number of times the two of you agree on. Doesn't count if you hit their bat; you have to hit them," Seifer explained, tapping his bat against his shoulder. "You got all that? Anything else?"

Nanette nodded at that. It was logical enough.
"Okay, I can see that," she told Seifer, "but... what happens if someone cheats? As in, uses something other than a Struggle bat?"

"Uh... Run and get help? Unless you know how to fight, it's better to run than get yourself hurt because of some loser who can't play the game right," Seifer said, shrugging. "The worst I've dealt with are people who use wood bats, so I carry one around with me in case I happen across one of the type. If you're feeling that desperate, you can ask me to deal with 'em, but I don't always hang around the sandlot, you know. Anything else?" Geeze, I feel like that guy in the movies that has to explain everything to the hero.

Nanette shook her head. "Nah, I don't think I could ask you to take on my--"
She stopped.
She bit her lip.
She changed the topic.
"So, um," she continued on that line of thought, "where does one go and learn how to... fight?"
Nanette wasn't interested in learning how to play Struggle.
For whatever reason, she wanted to learn how to fight.

"......."
Seifer gave Nanette a look. People didn't just ask questions like that. Not around here, they didn't. He ran his hand through his blond hair and shook his head, his scar standing out a bit more without his hair in the way. Suffice to say he looked different without his hat. "No one around here can teach you that. I've taught myself everything I know to reach my dream, but there's only so much you can do on your own. If something's wrong, tell me about it. I know I'm not the nicest guy, but I'll help anyways. So what is it you're really here for?"

Nanette turned her eyes aside, away from Seifer's intense glare.
...
"...I want to learn how to defend myself," the brown-haired girl replied, slowly working out the words as she figured out what to say, "You know. Just in case."
Nanette kept her eyes to the side, avoiding the blond boy's gaze as best she could.

"Just in case, huh? Unless you're planning on picking a fight with someone, you probably don't need to know how to," Seifer replied, crossing his arms and looking frustrated. Something else was up, he could tell that much. In Twilight Town, nobody really had any desire to learn how to fight without a good reason. Her didn't seem to fit with the ones he'd heard... "So what's the real problem, Nanette? You obviously wouldn't be talking to me if it wasn't something you thought someone else could help you with."

"Well, I'm not looking to pick a fight," Nanette immediately replied, "but like I said, this is... just in case."
Nanette nodded guiltily.
"I'm not saying more than that, Seifer," she said with an uncharacteristic tone of steel, "but I appreciate the sentiment."

"So you're just going to be stubborn, then. Fine, I'll show you what I know, but first you're going to tell me why you need to know how to fight, and 'just in case' isn't the right answer. Otherwise, I'm going right back to what I was doing," Seifer said, sounding a bit defiant.

"I..." Nanette stuttered out.
She couldn't just tell Seifer that she was afraid her father was out to beat her up.
Other than spreading rumors, Nanette didn't even know how true it was. It could have been a one time thing, when he threw that punch at her. It had been a chance meeting.
But the brown bruise on her chin still rubbed her the wrong way. Just in case she was wrong...
"...I'm sorry, Seifer." Nanette replied, an unfamiliar tone of earnestness creeping into her voice. "I can't... it wouldn't really be right to tell anyone yet."

Seifer was silent for a bit. Well, she was being sincere, if nothing else. He couldn't just not help her, though. He slipped his wooden bat out from his belt and tossed it to Nanette, gripping his struggle bat with both hands and demonstrating several quick swings. "Hold it like this. Hit whoever it is as hard as you can and more times than he can hit you. Get out of the way if they're starting to attack, retaliate with twice the force. If you think you're losing get as far away as you can and stay out of the other guy's reach. Simple enough?"
