"You sure you're up for this, Princess? I mean...such remedial work is best left for Bastion Staff..." James, one of the many guards around the Bastion stated. He'd usually been one of the people to escort Kairi around when she had permission to leave. At the moment, he was "supervising" the princess and the ninja as they...cut wood.
"Hyaaah!" Kairi declared with a fierce cry, slashing at a log of wood.
"I need the practice and the fireplaces need fresh wood anyway. It works out." She flashed a warm smile.
"So does she." she pointed to Yuffie.

"Hey!" Yuffie said, feigning insult in her body language but amusement in her voice. "Stuff like this hardly qualifies as 'training' for me, Princess. It would have to be a hundred times harder to count."
Yuffie then deigned it time to follow along. She picked up an ax and felt it out.
'Sure is clumsy,' she though, immediately comparing it to her weapons even though it was just a tool.

"A hundred times...huh? So how about we clear the rubble away along the outskirts of town, tommorow then?"
The princess suggested, all while slicing logs. James would toss her a new one and she'd simple slice it in two. Each time was a different cut, since each place had a different requirement.

Yuffie was left to retrieve her own logs, a point which made her narrow her eyes at the Princess of Heart's 'assistant' for a few seconds before getting over it.
"Menial labour is only good for building up a foundation of physical ability," Yuffie lectured, though her expertise on the area was somewhat questionable. Yuffie placed a log standing up in front of her then brought her ax overhead and down into the wood, chopping it in half.

Noticing Yuffie's glare, James flashed a slight grin, almost like it was payback for sneaking by him to get the Princess out of the Bastion so often. Regardless, his expression soon returned to a neutral state. He knew his duties for today, although:
"Right, it's also a necessary task in order to get things done---" Slice the keyblade cleaved through the wood, a horizontal slice to leave too clean stumps.
"So, you up for it tommorow?"

"Fine, fine," Yuffie said in a defeated tone. She'd already been helping out around the Wutai clan territory, as Kairi had seen. She supposed she couldn't get out of it now. "Just don't expect me to think of it as training. One of us already has a great foundation of physical ability."
Yuffie didn't chop any more wood yet since she had to take away the one she just did and go get another one.

With the next log tossed to her, she'd deflect the log upwards with the bluntside of the Keyblade, before jumping to slice it. As she landed, both halves fell at either side of her, rather gracefully.
"Right but your physical ability lies within your agility, but like our last arm wrestling matched proved...I'm strongeeeeerrr."
Intentionally dragging out that last word, she wined with her right eye before preparing for the next log toss.

"Funny, that isn't how I remember it," Yuffie said as she got back into place with more wood and swung the ax overhead again, working the muscles in her back as it was chopped.
"I seem to recall a few factors putting me at a severe disadvantage that day."

"Hmm Yuffie your memory sounds funny, the only thing I recall was your confidence."
SLICE!
"Which should help you put on some muscle."
Of note was Kairi's slashes were not fast, they were slow but precise, stretching and flexing the various upper-body muscles and core muscles alike for the twisted slashes.

Yuffie never expected Kairi to be low enough to "fix" a competition. Then again, she'd been showing the signs lately. There was that race in town right before the storm happened where she revealed previously unseen magical spells to help her win. Yuffie didn't like not being the one who was gloating.
"Because sixteen years as a ninja didn't already do that for me," she answered before returning with another log.

"Like I said, it's all about focus. You prefer your stealth, like how you snuck up on me the other day."
Kairi wasn't going to forget their little game of "Hide and Sneak" in her room.
"What do you guys call it, discipline...or something. Anyway..."
The Keyblade was brought over her head and then slammed down. Though of course she had James' help in setting the log.

Yuffie set her own log and brought her ax down overhead again. If she was going to have to do this and pretend it was beneficial then she was going to work out those shoulder muscles today. They were useful for generating physical strength and for the swinging motions of her favourite throwing attacks.
"I'm sure you know a lot about what ninjas call things," Yuffie laughed.

"Haha, right and if I don't I'll blame my lack of knowledge on the resident ninja! she giggled before adjusting her stance into a powerful swing. Using muscles which she normally didn't even think to use was becoming quite enjoyable for her. Then again, she wasn't subjected to such harsh physical regiments like the teen ninja.
"What I do know is that I feel great knowing that all the rooms will be properly heated when this is over."
Yep Kairi, taking joy in helping others.

"Doesn't Ansem the Wise have some kind of techno-machine built in the castle to keep it warm even without firewood?" Yuffie asked as she brought over another log and began to chop it into two halves down the top. This one was thick and required a few swings to finish.
Her question wasn't sarcastic. That was what people commonly believed.

Kairi and James looked at each other, then Kairi whispered something to James and then back again.
"Not exactly...without telling you the specifics, it's more of a system involving the distribution of heat through the fire place, powered by um...our 'special' computer."
Was all the red head was going to say, leaving out info about the Garden OS and the technological jargon that was the basic terms. Meanwhile she had a rather large log to hack at. This one would require several hard strikes, it also needed to be sliced into multiple pieces. Thus she'd be hacking at it for awhile yet.
