"Mermaids?!" Jaci asked incredulously. She couldn't have been mistaken. The drawing didn't look like anything but a mermaid. Jaci had heard stories of mermaids. They were devious creatures, almost like she was, but more cruel. Still, seeing some, or even one, would be wonderful. "Are you sure?" She asked, taking a quick look around. There weren't any signs of them. That was probably why Sun looked so disappointed. It made sense now.

Sun nodded quite quickly that Jaci seemed to be excited about mermaids, that she seemed to believe Suncatcher. She watched as her new found friend looked around for the mermaids. She bit her lip again thinking, then stood up and went to the water's edge. Maybe, they were underneath the water! She then stepped into the water. Surely, they would want to mess with the mute Indian girl again wouldn't they? She knew they were devious things, but she couldn't help but be amazed with them. She then knelt down and poked her face into the water, her eyes wandering around trying to see something through the water.

"Oh, be careful!" Jaci said, worried that her friend might fall in. Or that the mermaids would try to play some tricks on her. Jaci wasn't completely innocent of that, but mermaids played different tricks than she did. She followed Suncatcher to the water and began looking for signs of the mermaids too, except she didn't stick her face in the water. It was ok, really, she didn't need to see them now. There would be other times to come back and see if they were here.

Sun couldn't, or didn't, see anything in the water. Maybe they had gone out further away from the lagoon, to er, stretch their fins. She removed her face from the water and then stood up but then slipped in the water. She wasn't that far into the water but somehow managed to get wet anyway. She made a momentary splash as she slipped, a few splashes managing to hit Jaci.

Jaci flinched and backed away when the cold water splashed her. She shook herself before she checked on Suncatcher. "Are you alright?" The girl had only slipped a little bit, so she probably wasn't hurt.
It was too bad about the mermaids. Ah well... "I'm sure we'll be able to see them another time."Jaci told the girl. She held out her hand to help Suncatcher back onto dry land so she wouldn't slip again. For now they could just talk and enjoy the nice weather and the pretty scenery.

Sun nodded, taking Jaci's hand as she helped her up. Her clothes, the ones that she wore for she didn't really wear that much, were a bit wet but she didn't really care. She got dirty every here and there and it didn't really bug her anymore. She smiled at Jaci as she said that they could see them another time. It seemed that she did indeed believe Sun, which was reassuring. She hadn't told anyone else because one; her brothers would probably tease her about it telling her that they weren't real and stuff.
She smiled again, maybe some other time she could also show Jaci what else she had found, deep in the depths of the forest. She then looked at Jaci and pointed towards the beach, asking if she wanted to head that way. It had seemed from Sun's point of view that earlier Jaci had wanted to go to the beach.

"Oh, right!" Jaci nodded when Suncatcher reminded her about the beach. She began to lead the way, arriving quickly since they were already close by anyways.
Jaci plopped down and dug her feet into the sand. She always liked the feeling of sand between her toes. It was just so abnormal. She grinned as she wiggled her toes a little, then looked up at Suncatcher, motioning for her to sit down as well. "Can you write, Suncatcher?" Jaci asked. It was clear that she could draw, but writing would help a bit more than just pictures would. It was more tedious, but it was clearer.

Suncatcher followed Jaci to the beach, though it wasn't far from where they were. She sat down next to her new friend. The warm sand feeling good against her feet as she curled her toes into it. She hadn't been to the beach in awhile, not since she'd come here awhile back and discovered the mermaids. She nodded then smoothed some of the sand out that was between where the two were sitting. She sometimes preferred to draw than write but it seemed writing would be easier. Her mother had taught her and she often wrote on dried skin so that others could understand her. But, sadly she didn't have any with her. Sand would have to do.
She began to write in the sand, starting with a C and then writing out, "Call me Sun,".

Excellent! Jaci smiled and nodded to her new friend. "Alright, Sun." Jaci leaned back on her hands and looked up at the sky, trying to figure out a topic. Her eyes roamed around until they fell upon Sun's toy bow. A thoughtful expression crossed her face and she gestured to them with her chin. "How come you carry those around?" Jaci asked. "They don't look like they provide a lot of protection."

Sun continued to look at Jaci, watching as her eyes fell upon her bow and she asked why she carried them around. She shrugged and began to answer, writing in the sand.
'Don't know how to use a real one.'
She put simply, though there were other reasons but that one seemed the most relevant. Another reason was because her mother didn't really want her using a real one, though she would eventually. But, mainly she just didn't really know how. No one had ever given her a real bow before, she had made these by herself and had made due with them ever since, though they were getting a bit. Especially with her growing older.

Jaci's eyes scanned the single line of words Sun had written in the sand. She looked surprised. "It's not that much different, really. I'll teach you sometime, if you want." Jaci offered. Jaci had taught herself how to use a bow, so teaching someone else shouldn't be too difficult. And Sun already had some basic knowledge. "You're already really good with the one you have now. You did manage to hit me." She reminded the girl.
She wondered if she'd be able to get her hands on another bow for Suncatcher to practice with. For now Sun would be able to use her own bow and Jaci could lend her some arrows, and then they could just switch over to practicing with Jaci's bow if they needed to.

Sun smiled at Jaci as she offered to teach her some time. She had also never really asked anyone before, plus her brothers probably wouldn't teach her to. Females were supposed to do other things, men were supposed to hunt and protect the women. But, Sun always liked to adventure and wanted some way to protect herself. She grinned some as Jaci commented on her aim earlier, she supposed it was luck or perhaps she was actually getting good. That was good to know. Most of what she knew was self taught. Though, it would be nice to officially have someone to teach her.
She waved her hands up in the air at Jaci, trying to let her know that she wanted to show her something. Sure, she couldn't talk but she had other skills and traits that sort of made up for it. She fumbled towards a pouch on her waist and pulled out a flute. The pouch on her side was made of deerskin and was fringed, much like her outfit. She showed it to Jaci and then pulled it towards her mouth and blew into it, her fingers moving over the holes. She played a short tune, her eyes closed. She stopped and looked at Jaci, awaiting her reaction.

"A flute?" Jaci asked. Music playing hadn’t been one of her hobbies. She had tried it once, her mother attempted to teach her how to keep her out of trouble. Jaci didn’t really take to it well. It was difficult, and not all that fun to her. Running around with her bow was much more entertaining to her, so the music had been a lost cause.
Suncatcher, however, really seemed to have a knack for it. Suncatcher really didn’t seem like the fighting kind of type. Seeing her playing the flute looked so much more natural. It made for an excellent deception… "You’re really good!" Jaci said, nodding in approval. "My mom tried to teach me how to play music, but I was never any good. She said I didn’t have the patience for it." She continued, cracking a bit of a smile. [/blockquote]

Sun smiled at Jaci, she considered herself an amateur. She again had been mostly self taught, though her mother encourage her to play. She had been given a flute when she was really young and had played it ever since, but with her bow and arrows she had only learned that a year or so ago. Her smiles were thankful smiles, the only real way she knew how to let someone know she appreciated their comments.
Smiling again, she looked out across the ocean. It was such a beautiful day. A lovely day to meet a new friend. And it was a bright and sunny. She loved to bask in the sun. Sometimes she even glowed in it. She bit her lip trying to think of what to talk about, or show Jaci. She then erased what she had written earlier in the sand and began to write again;
'Don't know why I haven't seen you before', she wrote, then smiled at Jaci.

She merely shrugged in response. "I’m running around a lot." Jaci told her. "I keep busy by running errands or helping out around the reservation, and when I’m not, I’m out here." Now that she thought of it, she really did keep herself busy all the time. It made her wonder how many other faces she had overlooked. She wasn’t surprised she hadn’t completely noticed Suncatcher, the only way she would have given her a second look is if she had known she was mute. The girl did look slightly familiar though. "Come to think of it, I might have seen you around before. I dunno though. There are a lot of people on the reservation."
Jaci began grinning again. "I feel like I talk too much because I’m not hearing someone else reply." She admitted. [/blockquote]
