Argh! That stupid old wizard was actually learning new tricks! That wasn't supposed to happen! Yuffie would definitely sue the pants... er... robes off of him! Well, that is to say she would if Merlin's new security spells weren't put in place specifically to ward off her recurring criminal offences of theft on his home and property. That would just make the court hearing complicated.
'Who does he think he is, anyway?' Yuffie Kisaragi thought as she hopped over the distance between two rooftops, allowing an enchanted rope to fly underneath her as she did so. 'Making a house with all kinds of magic alarms. Of course any ninja worth their name would try to sneak in! It's the ultimate challenge! But no, the fart has to yell every single time I get caught.'
Yuffie made a sharp turn and ran behind and around a chimney stack, allowing the rope to chase her and get curled up around it so that the thing would stop coming after her and attempting to tie her up. Really, even if his detection was getting better Merlin would need to think up some new capturing tricks if he wanted to get his grubby mitts on this fair young maiden. By now she could dodge these things in her sleep!
"Catch me if you can!" Yuffie yelled back at the Borough pridefully after dropping down to the sidewalk again. She showed no signs of her "defeat" at the hands of the wizard's anti-theft spells and instead reveled in inciting his yelling from down the block. Of course, she also knew by now to keep running away before those sparklies from that magic stick of his could reach her from over there.
It was some time later that Miss Kisaragi found herself concealed within some shrubbery, prying eyes trained on the movements of some guards. Did they really think adding a couple of new recruits could keep her out? Ha! She was the greatest ninja in the Radiant Garden(Her father temporarily set aside for mental bragging purposes, of course)! Not even the castle of Ansem the Wise was safe from her! That and sneaking in would be a good morale booster after the failed theft earlier.
"I hope Kairi made some of those chocolate things again," Yuffie wondered aloud to herself as she moved. It would normally be a bad idea for a stealth operation's secrecy for the one doing it to speak their thoughts out loud. Yuffie may not have been a master yet but she had at least gotten to the point of training herself to only let that slip when it didn't matter. By this point she was scaling some large pipes on the third story of the castle's outer wall, so prying ears weren't much of a concern. Still, good thing her father had been set aside for the moment or his mental scolding might make her lose focus. "Aerith loves those. They'd be perfect for today's picniiieeEAAHHH!!"
Darn Godo and his mental scolding! Did he know what he did to his daughter's concentration!? Still, being the protege of the head of the Wutai Ninja Clan, she was well-equipped to adapt. Reacting in record time Yuffie's right hand reached to her belt and released a clip, freeing up a line of wire with a grappling hook on the end. As she fell back at dangerous heights Yuffie armed herself, spun her lifeline around, and released it up just as she was passing by the bottom of the pipes she had been grappling, the point where they went inward back inside the castle walls. With expert timing the hook and line got itself around that small horizontal stretch and wrapped itself around, arresting her descent. "Ha! Even gravity fails against the Great Ninja Yuffie!" she proclaimed proudly, once again ignoring the part of the situation that was her fault in the first place.
'Still, good thing Kairi wasn't with me when it happened,' the girl added with a slightly embarrassed smile and closed eyes as she started to climb her way up the line. 'The kid looks up to me, after all. Can't let her see less than my best!'
The "kid" in question was the fourteen year-old Kairi; a noble girl who lived in the Radiant Garden castle with her family and Ansem the Wise. Two years younger than Kisaragi, the redhead and she had nonetheless formed something of a bond and often sneaked her out of the bastion without permission to spend time with Yuffie's friends together or to enjoy some good old-fashioned mischief. The picnic they had planned today was a more innocent than usual trip for them and she probably could have just asked for permission to go out, of course.
But hey, where's the fun in that?
"Ready to go, Princess?" asked a confident Yuffie, revealing neither of today's two less-than-spectacular moments in her toothy grin and smiling eyes. She stood on the railing of a small balcony, left hand hanging on to the edge of the wall next to her for support and right hand resting confidently on her hip. Kairi may not technically have been a princess but her family's social level was still as close to royalty as the Radiant Garden had besides the sage Ansem himself. It was a nickname that first appeared during some of their first meetings when Yuffie had attempted and failed to sneak into the castle a few times as a child and it had come up now and then for the several years they had known each other.
Well, Kairi's nickname for her was no better. Literally.
