Sora whistled cheerfully as he strode along the oddly quiet beach of Destiny Island in the bright afternoon sun. Usually, Tidus or Wakka were out and working on their underwater soccer thing, and Selphie doing mostly whatever, watching her friends or skipping rope. Even Riku wasn’t around today, which just made the quiet even weirder. ‘Everyone’s got the cold today, it looks like’, Riku’s mom had told him when he stopped by. It kind of made him feel a little bad, being the only one not sick, out enjoying the day while everyone else was probably sleeping. But today was just too beautiful a day to sit around and do nothing, so Sora had quickly set about finding things to do. Getting back into a good mood after his disappointment of having no one to play with today wasn’t even very hard; Sora had kept himself occupied with fishing, some swimming, and making a sand castle. The fish he’d caught was even bigger than the one Riku had caught last time they went fishing, and he couldn’t wait to brag to his best friend about his titanic catch! The others would probably like to hear about it, too; they’d all like hearing about how thin-as-a-rail Sora had managed to keep the small row boat from tipping over AND reel in a fish as big as he did.
But, it still didn’t make the lonely-sounding waves or the sea and the sound of seagulls about in the air any less empty. It just felt so weird not hearing his friends laughing and having a good time, too. Weirdness aside, Sora whistled cheerfully anyways as he combed the beach for his wooden sword. He remembered the other day he and Riku had been playing the good guy and the bad guy, and he’d lost his sword during the course of the mock fight. The two friends had combed the beach for it, but they didn’t find it anywhere, and they’d given up around time for dinner. They couldn’t keep playing that game until they tracked down his wooden sword, and that was just terrible! Selphie looked so mad when she was the only one who didn’t get saved in the game; it made Sora feel bad to have left her out like that, even if it hadn’t even been on purpose! But… it didn’t look like he would be recovering his lost fake weapon any time soon, from the looks of things. It’d either been sent up into some tree, buried in the sand or lost at sea. It’d probably just be better to get a new one, anyways; his was old, and it was threatening to break anyways.
“Aw, man… where am I going to find another wood sword…?” Sora wondered aloud, sitting down on the beach and leaning back, putting his hands behind his head and staring up at the clouds. That was something he hadn’t done today; he hadn’t looked at the clouds, or tried to find shapes in them. One of them looked sort of like a bird with a big body and little wings… the rest of them looked like balls of fluff. That was kind of disappointing; he’d wanted to try to pick out some stuff to draw when his mom called him back in for dinner later. Sora stood back up and stuck his hands in his pockets, wondering what to do now. Then it hit him; the others had been talking about coming up with some new games to play! That was perfect! Maybe Sora could play the hero’s rival this time, and let one of the others be the hero. They could change it up every time, too, so everyone would have just as much fun when they played it. That was just perfect! Everyone would be happy to have something new to play! Sora turned to go off in another direction, towards the little islet a little ways away, and after a few steps ended up tripping over something. Thankfully, sand didn’t hurt quite as much as falling on other types of ground, but it still knocked the wind out of him.
Sora picked himself up, and what else did he trip on but the wooden sword he’d lost the other day, mostly buried in the sand save for the hilt! He might not’ve been too happy to land face-first in the sand, but he was thrilled to have found his lost mock weapon! Now all he had to do was wait for everyone to get better and they could get back to playing their games! Sora beamed as he dislodged his wooden sword from the sand and slipped it through his belt. It didn’t take long to decide his next activity; he was going to beat Riku in a race one day, and he was going to practice running right now so he could do it! Sora took off running down the beach, grinning. He might not’ve had anyone to play with on this lonely day, but there was still plenty to do, and he wasn’t going to let his temporary solitude get him down in the dumps! There were plenty of other days they could play and have a good time; a couple of days by himself couldn't hurt!
