Riku could feel his lungs losing more and more air with every second. He started to worry about Wakka- he'd have to go up soon, and Wakka might even be worse off. His fears turned out to be unneeded, however- the redhead soon emerged, and with a considerably strange object...It was almost like a sword of coral.
He followed his friend as they made a dash for the surface. He was ready to get some air.

Before Wakka made the dash for topside he stopped outside of the hole and examined the object that he had found. An interesting red colour, and he could see now where his hand was bleeding from a shallow cut. Good thing he had been moving slowly or it could have been worse.
He was almost ready to shwo it off a bit to Riku before they made their way for air but then Wakka felt movement from below. Looking down he opened his eyes wide as a huge form, easily a little bigger as they were, came crawling up the side of the rocks after him. A giant red crab with equally giant claws was ascending up out of the crevasse, possibly agitated by Wakka's intrusion.
He'd never seen anything like it before, but Wakka was equally worried as fascinated, not to mentioned taxed for breath. He skittered up away from the sea floor, leaving the creature behind but taking the relic from the deep with him.

Noticing Wakka's wide eyed look, Riku followed his gaze below and was startled to see a huge red crab following them with murder in its eyes. He'd never seen anything like that before- it figured that the most interesting parts of this world were deep at the bottom of the sea.
After gawking at it for a second he hurriedly accelerated upwards. It wouldn't do to try to fight that thing underwater- his limbs moved way too slowly to efficiently combat it. Instead he joined Wakka in making a hasty retreat, towards the glittering light of the surface above.

Wakka's head broke the surface not a moment too soon as the redhead immediately started gasping for fresh air. As he took the precious oxygen in his open maw quickly turned to a smiling one. What an adventure! Sure it was short and sure they hadn't seen much, but it was at the bottom of the sea! OK not really, but as close as they could hope to get tonight.
Wakka was practically laughing by the time he was breathing properly again and his lungs weren't burning anymore. He looked over to Riku, not saying a word but his eyes asking "Well?".

Breaking through to the surface, he breathed in a grateful amount of life giving air. Panting wildly, he was laughing in between gasps, thrilled at the adventure they'd just experienced. Sure, it was just a temporary solution to the bigger problem he had, but it proved there was still some stuff left here to investigate.
"That was incredible! Who would have known there were crabs that big!? How'd you even find that trench in the first place!? Haha!"
Quieting down after a couple minutes, he eyed the strange coral object Wakka had retrieved. "What's that?"

"Find it?" Wakka asked, clearly amused. "I didn't find it. We found it, just now. And this is our proof of discovery, ya!?"
The redhead held the stick-like coral up out the water above his head, letting it sparkle as water dripped off of it in the orange light of the now-dwindling sunset. He observed it proudly for a few moments and then brought his tired arm back down to the water, returning his gaze to Riku.
"Don't get the wrong idea, Riku. I had no idea what we'd find down there either," he answered, looking unusually cunning as he did.

Realization slowly dawned on Riku- he'd been duped! In a sense, anyway. Wakka had merely neglected to mention there was anything beneath the water, and given the impression that he knew something.
"Hey! That's not terribly fair, y'know! What if there was nothing?" He scowled for a moment, before, unexpectedly, becoming light-hearted again.
"Alright, alright, I know why you did it, and I am grateful. It certainly was fun, and we even came out with a cool souvenir."
He looked at the artifact again, marveling at the sword like shape. "Looks pretty sharp...it could even be a weapon."

"Hey, I said I'd show you what no one has searched yet. That includes me," Wakka laughed as he turned and started to swim back toward the island. Light would be gone soon and it was still a ways back. He didn't want to run out of energy treading water.
"I showed you that because I believed we would find something. I love the sea, Riku. People have searched over it and found nothing, but look at it. The ocean is huge and there's no telling how deep. We can't even search it properly, but someday I want to find a way. I want to know what we can find down where we can't look, and there's plenty left to search right here by our own home."

Riku followed slowly, tired out from his underwater adventure but still full of energy, boosted by excitement at the discovery.
He smiled at Wakka's comment, nodding determinedly. "You can count me in, Wakka. The sea is incredible- who knows what ELSE is down there? There has to be a way to explore it all."
Turning over, he stared up at the sky while treading through the water. "I still want to see what's out there someday- beyond the horizon, maybe even beyond the sky. But it helps to know that there's still a lot to find, right here."
He looked at Wakka, grinning. "Though Sora's gonna need some training before he can join us, I'd say."

"A few swimming challenges form you and it'll be all he thinks about for a while," Wakka answered, not too worried about figuring out how to motivate their friends. Tidus would be in because he loved the sea as well, and Selphie never let them get away with doing things without her. The real issue was "How?". People couldn't go to the bottom of the sea, that's just how it was.
Well, they were still kids. They could figure it out later.

The rest of the trip back was spent in silence, Riku too excited to even speak. Eventually they came upon their playground island, letting himself wash onto the shore. He stood up slowly, shaking himself off, and walking up the shoreline, his soaking feet leaving wet imprints in the sand.
Turning around, he gestured to Wakka. "Hey, let me see that thing."

Wakka wasn't as fast a swimmer as Riku or Tidus so he took a bit longer to get to the beach. Dragging himself up out of the waves he leaned backward with his back to the sunset, panting. That was certainly strenuous, and his parents sure wouldn't be pleased to hear about it. Still, he'd managed to cheer Riku up, so it was worth it.
Upon hearing the request of his friend Wakka took one last look at the object in his hand and then tossed it to the silver-haired teen with a smile.
"It's your's," he said. "Something to remind you of the cool stuff you can find around here, ya!?"

Catching it smoothly, he held it in his hand, brandishing it like a sword. "A little too rough to be called a sword, anyway. Maybe you could make one with it?"
Taking an experimental swing, he nodded. "I'll keep this close at hand. Could come in handy some day. It'd pack way more punch than my wooden sword, anyways."
Swinging it a few more times, he grinned as it whistled through the air. "Ha! Ha! Yeah, this would make a great weapon."
He sighed, happily this time, as he breathed in the evening air.

"And just who are you planning on fighting?" Wakka asked with a laugh at his pal's antics. It was good to see him in such a great mood after the gloomy note their meeting had taken at the beginning. Wakka was never one for their weapons games himself. He played with them just using his trusty sports ball, which was all the weapon he ever figured himself to need.
"Come on, why don't we head back before the light's all gone?" he asked, gesturing his thumb toward the dock where just their two boats remained.

"Hey, you never know! If we find a way to whatever lies beyond this world...There could be anything."
He closed his eyes, savoring the thought. He was even more determined to find his way out of here- that was certain. But it was nice to know there was still stuff to appreciate here on the island, as well.
He nodded slowly. "Yeah...Yeah, let's head back."
