It was odd.
Odd that someone had run screaming out of the underground tunnels, screaming about a monster that had tried to pull them through a storm drain.
Odd that over the next few days after that, more rumors had surfaced, all saying the exact same thing as that one first person.
Odd that none of the rumors could say what the monster looked like.
In any case, there was only one way down into the maze of the Twilight Town Sewers... only one that could be used, anyways. Many of the other manholes were welded shut, or the ladder was rusty and dangerous.
This one, tucked away in the back of an alley, was the best choice for those going into the sewers.

"'Monster in the sewer', huh?" Seifer Almasy said to himself, looking down into the open manhole and smelling the usual dankness of a sewer. Supposedly, they weren't all that bad, but Seifer had never been interested in smelling them for himself. The thought of a monster was exciting, though. This is my chance; everyone thinks I'm just full of hot air, but I'll get proof today I'm not some chump.
That was what he thought as he descended into the sewers, removing a flashlight from his pocket and flicking it on in conjunction with drawing the replica sword from his belt. He started walking in the general direction of the place that girl had said she'd been 'abducted', eyes and flashlight scanning the darkness around him for any sign of what might have been down here.

What Seifer could see and hear told two different stories.
What Seifer saw was an entirely ordinary sewer, only extraordinary in its size. There was pathways along the side of the water, and the water itself apparently clear and moving swiftly yet quietly.
What Seifer heard, instead, was the load roar of wind and water, almost as if the tunnels were flooded... only there was no visible sign of anything like that. His flashlight would shine upon a fork. The right pathway was where the sound of the water roared out of, and the left pathway had a glimmer of light at the end of it.

Seifer paused at the fork to think, tapping the blunt end of his replica sword against his shoulder as he mentally debated which path to take. That light was kind of suspicious, but even moreso was the sound of a storm coming from the dark path. After a minute, he just looked annoyed.
"I think I'll check out that noise first," He decided, turning down the darker path and starting forward, shining his flashlight forward in anticipation of... something. Part of him doubted it was a monster, but you could never be too careful in places like this... and if it WAS a monster, this wasn't the time to be playing games with his life.

The flashlight seemed barely able to keep the tunnel lit for more than a moment as Seifer continued down it, towards the sound. Algae grew on damp parts of the wall, giving it a greenish red color, like some sort of tainted blood, and the water began to trickle over cracks and such the further he went down the tunnel, pouring into small holes and down pipes too small to fit through.
Finally, Seifer could locate the source of the sound... it was loudest near one particular wall that seemed oddly clear of anything growing. From here, the sound of rushing water was absolutely unmistakable.

Seifer raised an eyebrow at the sight of the clean wall seperate form the algae. That... was strange. So what, was the monster eating the algae off of that wall... Or was that stuff he passed before not algae at all? "I've got a bad feeling about this..." He commented aloud, shining his flashlight around the chamber to find what he was looking for.

Truth be told, there wasn't much else in the area. It was a slightly enlarged segment of tunnel, continuing back the way Seifer had gone and another direction where the trickle of water remaining poured in a miniature waterfall into some unknown chamber. As Seifer shown his light on the hole in the wall that the water was pouring down out of, there was a small 'chrk' sound, barely audible.

That small 'Chrk' sound was enough to garner Seifer's attention, quiet though it had been. He'd almost missed it amid the roaring of water, but it was definitely there. So there was, at least, something down here. Wonderful. "Gah, I wish the bad horror movie bit of this would get over with so I could get rid of whatever this thing is..." He muttered to himself, standing still and searching intently for whatever had made the sound, or where it had come from.

Seifer's flashlight scanned the area that he was in, but no luck could be found on finding the source of the sound. There was no movement or anything from the drop off besides the sound of water splashing into more water, there was nothing down the way he'd came... Wait, there it was again!
Chrk. Crk. The sound was repeating itself faster now, and there was some snapping and popping noises now...
...and was that the sound of something dripping? It sounded like it was coming from the cleared wall.

Well, I know which way to go now... Seifer thought, heading forwards to where the dropoff was. He shone his flashlight down as a test to see how far the fall was (just in case) before returning to the strange wall and pondering it for a short time. "Hmph... there's something weird about this wall..." He said aloud, feeling like there was more to it than just a lack of plant life.

The 'something weird' was the fact that popping, snapping, and cracking noises were coming from it. And as Seifer would learn, standing in front of a wall with the sound of rushing water behind while it's making cracking noises is not the brightest move.
A crack appeared on the surface of the wall, and starting spiderwebbing, water shooting forth from it in a misty stream. All of this lasted about 3 seconds until the wall burst open, a gush of water pouring forth and washing Seifer down the dropoff, which his earlier glimpse had revealed as a 20 foot fall into a pool down below.
A sharp crack on the head, and Seifer was out like a light.
When he woke up, he would find himself floating on his back in a large tunnel in waist deep water. Fortunately, his flashlight was still working.

Seifer hauled himself out of the water and sputtered, sitting on the little walkway the repair folks used when they were down here. It took him a minute to put together what had happened because of the hard smack on the head, but he looked mad afterwards. "Gah! I thought those people were supposed to be making sure the pipes down here DIDN'T burst? Tch..." He grumbled, rubbing the knot on his head where he'd been hit. Great, he lost his hat, too. Well, his replica sword, wooden bat and flashlight had survived (And amazingly, the flashlight still worked), so that was a plus. And he seemed to be all right except for the bad headache, but that'd go away soon enough. He was lucky he didn't drown.
Seifer got to his feet and flicked his flashlight back on, brushing his damp blond hair out of his face and looking around. He didn't recognize this place... Lost too, eh? Well, he'd have to brave one of those rusty ladders to get back out of here, but whatever; now that he was here for real, he may as well start searching. There was only one way to proceed, and that was to go directly forward, so he continued onwards.

It quickly became clear that Seifer was in a part of the sewers that was no longer maintained by any workers. The walls were an old, earthy color and the floor was eroded into a curved, smooth surface. In addition to this, waist deep water wasn't really helping the area, and it gave off the feel of being deep.
Seifer's flashlight would soon catch a brief glimpse of some inky shadow beneath the surface of the water moving into a side tunnel. He would have to crouch a little to be able to enter the tunnel, and there was the possibility that the water would fill the tunnel later on.

Seifer's flashlight followed the shadow into the side tunnel, and he bent over to peer down it. He couldn't see the end of it, and frankly, being caught in a pipe where he could drown if the water level went up much more than a few inches wasn't on his list of things to do. "Looks like I'll be taking another route..." He commented, starting off straight ahead. There had to be a larger pathway to wherever that shadow had gone, and he'd much rather take more time wading through dirty water than risk drowning himself in a small pipe.

As Seifer went on, he'd find several more tunnels to the side, but just like the previous one they were a bit too small for his liking. Eventually, the tunnel began to curve to the right, opening up into a large chamber that Seifer's flashlight couldn't illuminate all the way to the other side. There was absolutely no reason for any sewer system to have something like this. Where WAS he?
Either way, he needed to look on the right side of the chamber to see if there was a larger tunnel to find the shadow.
