"You," Hades said with a deadly edge of seriousness in his voice.
"I know you..." The Lord of the Dead gave his chin a quick rub, willing the memories back to himself...
...
"Guess not," he shrugged. "Anyway--"
The god swooped down on Payn, his great gray toga swirling in the motion among the throngs of ghostly clouds echoing in the wind.
"I've got a proposition for you, mini-monster."

"My lord," Payn acknowledged, fighting the instinct to prostrate himself before one who could crush him with the merest thought, Hades - quite literally - owned his soul no matter what Perdition said about the matter.
Where was Perdy, anyway? With a God here one might think a prophet of those 'Outer' gods at least somewhat curious...
He called a stop to his lingering thoughts.
"What be your will?"

"Oooh," Hades chuckled at the use of lord. Been a while since he'd had any help who knew who was in charge! "Lord. Finally, someone who gets the grand picture!"
Though a second glance left him tempted to say something.
"Here's the deal, tyke: I'm looking to put a little hurt on a little hero, maybe you heard of him-- Hercules?"
Blazing blue furious fire erupted at the deathly cool tone in which Hades said that name.
Ooooh.
"He's a little, mmm, tied up between two baddies right now--" Hades continued, waving his hands at the nonsensical aspect of it all. "One's my own rent-a-monster, and the other's a bit more... eh... natural.
"Needless to say, my monster on a leash is packs the bigger punch, but hey! Two monsters, one go? Who am I to argue with the Fates, am I right?
"But here's the thing: local wannabe zeroes are trying to put a stop to the second of these two monsters.
"I'm not," the Lord of the Dead felt the need to explain, "worried about some two-bit wannabes taking down this second guy. I just, you know, want to keep the guy in the same pristine condition he is now when--" Hades coughed, "if Wonderboy comes calling.
"So, here's the deal: get rid of the local Cassanova Squad, keep my backup pitcher in one piece until I give the cue. In return, well..."
The god gave a small, knowing smile.
"...I hear you've got quite the sweet tooth, eh?"

Eyebrows (what little there were) went up at names of a real hero - even a halfbreed like Payn knew better than to march upon a demigod or a true monster and internally he sweated at the thought of Hades sending him out to play splatter with a bigwig...
But then it didn't turn out to be half so terrible. Bodyguard work.
But the deal was cinched the moment Hades mentioned sweets. He had never once feasted upon delicacies from the Underworld - once upon a time he had thought they didn't exist. His mouth watered at the thought.
And an even smaller, less rational part of him was impressed that Hades knew that he had a fondness for sweets at all. Truly his Lord was all knowing.
"..." Payn said. He had the odd feeling he should salute or kiss his lord's feet or something equally grandiose but having never gone through etiquette class or seen anyone do any such things he managed to slay the odd impulse.
He also had to slay the impulse to laugh like an evil meglomaniac that had gotten anything and everything he had ever wanted. That took a little more doing.
"Would you like these 'Cassanovas' extra crispy or merely broiled?" Payn finally asked, leering grin on his zombie face.

Hades barked out a laugh. "Now that is what I like to hear! Alright small fry," the god said with a pat on Payn's back, "you got the job!"
The god didn't pat him on the back.
He shoved him forward, into the gray mists surrounding the god's toga.
"One last thing--" Hades shouted down after the falling demon, "Try not to die or anything, will ya?"
Gray mists swarmed Payn's field of vision. The demon was being sent through some kind of portal.
But why had Lord Hades mentioned that Payn might... die? Surely this second monster knew they were allies for Hades, rig--
And fwoom-- Payn was out of the mists, and now flat on his face on the outskirts of town.
But as Payn raised his head, he might realize what Hades' passing remark hinted at--
Before Payn was a foot.
A huge foot.
A black foot.
The foot of a Heartless.
A massive Darkside Heartless-- easily five stories tall-- stood facing the city at Mount Olympus' foot, intent on the hearts fleeing in terror at the sight of the monstrosity.
Two heroes-in-training, however, were standing on the rooftops in such a position that they were eye-to-eye with the monster. One of these wore a great blue robe, and the other one... well, he had a sword. Nothing doing, really. Hard to see much more than that from this distance, down at ground floor.
But as the gigantic Heartless twisted its head around to look at the sudden arrival, Hades' words of wisdom took on new meaning:
The Heartless would be intent on Payn, too.
And Payn wasn't supposed to touch it. Primary Objective: Protect the Darkside from as much damage as possible until Hercules arrives in 20 turns! Your reward will change depending on how much HP the Darkside has left by that time! Secondary Objective: Defeat the heroes-in-training! Secondary Objective: Avoid the attacks the Darkside sends at you! Darkside HP [hp=124/124]

There was a moment of disorientation that Payn couldn't blame on the ancestral environment, evolution not being quite so applicable to a god-created creature.
Well. This was.
Well. That was. Um.
Payn looked up. And up. And up and up and so on and so forth.
Payn had once pondered upon the possibility that humans were born stupid. Now he was revising that hypothesis to include the possibility that humans were born with a death wish.
That thing (and what was it - the air around it was charged with... hunger? Payn blinked. If it was it was not a hunger he was familiar with) could flatten him accidentally.
He blinked upwards. His opponents were vaguely in reach being on the roof and all.
He sent them a welcome gift. It was an indiscrimante attack whose range and composition - hopefully - would not affect the thing he was protecting.
Hopefully it wouldn't stomp on him.
Hopefully.

TURN 1 A feminine scream could be heard from within the boom of black smoke the erupted skyward from Payn's Dark Bursts. The young woman in question burst from the smoke, looking ready to do battle. She had been hit, but it was obvious that not all of the blows had landed. However, she immediately cast two Ice spells towards the Darkside. Perhaps she thought the Darkside had sent them? On the neighboring rooftop, however, it looks like the man with the sword had noticed where the quadruple row of dark magic had come from. He signaled something to the woman before pulling out a bow. Oh. The man shot three quick arrows, each that could deal 2 damage, for the demon. The man knew where the ultimate priority was though, and turned back to the Darkside, aiming a fourth arrow for the Heartless' face. The Darkside, meanwhile, wasn't going to sit around. It raised its hand high... and brought it back down, sending a shockwave across the man's rooftop. The man nearly fell off!, with how strong the wave was. He didn't have the opportunity to fire that turn. Darkside [hp=120/124]

Payn grunted as the arrows thunked into him. Ever since he had been inverted - turned into a sorceror instead of a warrior - his reflexes had simply not been up to par.
Where was Perdition, anyway?
Payn glared at the monolithic buildings. He had a fighter`s instinct and his fighter's instincts demanded that his opponents face him here not from fifty feet away!
With a glare he froze the bottom of the woman's building. Then he with a crack he set it on fire. Stone pillars emerged from the ground to deal potent damage to the weakened structure - spearing it from behind so that it would fall backwards and not, for instance, on top of the giant Heartless.
He would have yelled a challenge had he not been, ah, involved in protecting creature that would no doubt stomp him flat had he opened his fool mouth.
He didn't bother with the human male, however. A small, vindicative part of him wanted the warrior to see- unimpeded - what would happen to his companion.
And then he cast a protective charm on the great big creature because really, why not?

[ I know how you あふぇ。] TURN 2 The resulting falling building was really quite magnificent in its fallen splendor. Bit smoky though, hard to see know... should blow over by the next round, but still...
"PRELL!" shouted the unknown man from way over. So that was her name, huh? It looked like Payn might have just gotten his wish.
In retaliation to this sudden turn of events, and unknown to Payn at the moment, the emotionally distressed man immediately took his sword and flung it at the looming Darkside.
It hit, and it did 1 measly damage.
But here's the kicker-- it stayed in, just around its shoulder. That was gonna continue hurting until it got out.
Not content with throwing his primary weapon, the unknown man then proceeded to pull out his bow once more and took aim at the Heartless. He paused though. Can't hear from here, but is he chanting a spell?
The monstrous Heartless, meanwhile, suddenly dived for the floor. The man up top changed aim accordingly, but the Darkside stayed as is, its hands doing something out of sight. Darkside [hp=119/124]

Payn grunted at his handiwork.
And then, without even a backwards glance, he fired off a barrage of magic missiles at the warrior-cum-archer. Twelve to be exact. While not the deadliest trick in his arsenal they were bright and numerous and very distracting.
He'd been told (and had experienced it before himself) that the glare would temporarily cause a 'flash blindness' if it were dark. He didn't hope it would hold here but he could give it a try at the very least.
He was a little worried, he had to admit. For a moment there the building looked like it would land on him.

TURN 3] Payn's missles hit home, though the jettison of dust that darkened his view did not stretch to the man's location-- he remained unstunned.
With a barrage like that though--
Boom.
A flare of red shot across from the man's fallen body for the Darkside Heartless. At its core was..
...an arrow?!
The man had managed to hold on to the bow and arrow, and keep counting all the while. The guy has an unhealthy amount of determination, wouldn't you say? Perhaps if the incoming attacks had been more than Weak level...
The blazing arrow hit the Darkside's backside. The arrow's damage was halved to one, but the spell cast blazed through the magical protection and gave the Darkside a nasty 8 points of damage.
And then Payn would feel the cold burn of a sword's metal across both his shoulders, and two feet upon his head.
The woman-- Prell-- had survived.
And had just fallen onto his head, and somehow scratched at both his shoulders with a blade in the same go. [ 1 normal attack damage from landing on his head, 2 per sword slice on the shoulders ]
It wasn't hard to guess how she survived, from the blue aura following her around-- she had some kind of spell or item affecting her. But she looked unscathed. How--
Boom.
The Darkside was back on its feet.
And it held something... huge and black in its hands.
The Darkside lifted it into the air...
...whereupon the darkness split up and shot into the sky.
That can't be good. Darkside [hp=110/124]

This is interesting a voice in his head said cheerfully.
Payn - meanwhile - was dealing with a very irate women who had somehow landed on his head. He still wasn't too clear on how it had happened, only that it had and that it was ridiculously painful and that he was probably failing Hades' sacred charge.
And wouldn't get chocolate.
Payn tried not to cry. It was a close thing.
One at a time.
He threw a fire spell at her. And then for good measure an ice spell. And an electricity spell.
"You," he said disgustedly as the darkness rose into the sky like a round of dark laughter, "attacked us first."
And because it was the usual thing, he ended it with a fireball.

TURN 4 Fwoom went the blaze of fire, slamming into Prell. She promptly fell off of Payn's head, to no one's surprise. And then the demon continued the onslaught. The Ice spell that followed hit her too. But by the time he fired off the Lightning spell, the girl had grown privy-- she expected the coming blows now!-- and deftly leaped sideways to avoid the Lightning spell. "What?" the girl coughed out as the demon said something accusatory. "Where do you get off making fal--" WHAM. Both Payn and Prell were knocked completely off their feet by something dark, both of their next attacks not given the chance to fire. It didn't take more than a look to find out what-- The sky. It was now officially raining darkness, in medium-sized meteors that dealed 3 damage per round to everyone in the Darkside's spitting distance. It looks like a lot of buildings got hit too. Blasted Darkside. Meanwhile, the other hero-in-training is nowhere in sight. Is he up to something...? Darkside [hp=109/124]

Mr. Arrowman is missing~ someone said singsong in his head. At the moment, Payn couldn't quite think - his brain had been jostled by the raining dark matter. Oh and by the way, there's a sword stuck in him, Payn-Payn.
Payn risked a glance backwards at the towering juggernaut. There was indeed a sword stuck in the creature.
He'd best get it out.
Errr.
Yeah, this would probably hurt. Maybe he'd try later. When he was less likely to be caught in the crossfire of ten or twenty different attacks.
"Payn'll need your help with that," the demon muttered trying to think of sweets and treats and why he was bothering to do this at all.
Right.
In the meantime: he had heroes to fry and freeze and burn. They were proving rather... spectacularly resistant against his spells. Or at least the woman was. Mr. Arrowman, as the voice in his head was cheerfully reminding him, was missing.
He still chucked the fireball he'd wanted to throw and then the forced the ground beneath her to rise up in four-foot spikes of doom that also happened to block off any immediate retreat backwards.
His spells were cycling.
Great.
"Just. Go. Away."
He punctuated his statements with bursts of dark energy.

TURN 5 Payn thoroughly surprised the blue robed warrior before him, belting out all of his attacks in an impressive flurry as he did. Prell was starting to look worse for wear. Her lip looked a little swollen too. "Well..." Prell said, pretending to think about Payn's order. "Okay!" ... ??? A flash of blue and white ensued. The girl had teleported. Of all the rotten-- BRBOOOSH...Ah. More raining darkness. [ Expected 3 damage to everyone, yay! ]A quick glance around didn't immediately show where she'd dissappeared to, but Teleport spells are only supposed to move you within line of sight-- she can't be far. Bmft.Bmft, bmft.Three arrows appeared in the Darkside's right shoulder. The archer had hidden himself-- that was what he had been doing! Where was he firing from now?! Meanwhile, the Darkside was back up and attacking again. The monstrous Heartless was leaning back, its arms outstretched, jutting out the hollow heart-shaped hole in its chest. Darkness suddenly fired off. Not once, but twice-- in the form of a rapid-moving ball of energy. The first was zooming directly for Payn. If Payn couldn't manage to dodge it, he'd get 4 damage for the trouble. The second was still in the air, moving fast in a straight line for somewhere else not yet discernable-- The Cassanova Squad, mayhaps? Oh ho...!
